I just about burned my kitchen down.
The ends of this steamer caught fire on my gas range!

Holds Odors which are then transferred to food April 14, 2012

I had the same experience as the Person from California.  I hand washed and rinsed my new Ttudeau silicone steamer basket.  Today I tried it for the first time and noticed a strong fragrant smell coming from the pot while the broccoli was cooking.  The broccoli heads but not the stems tasted like the odor.  Attempting to remove the offensive odor from the basket, I boiled the basket in tap water with baking soda and then rinsed it thoroughly.  That didn't work. The basket now smells like a blend of perfume and broccoli and the handle is pure perfume.  It would seem that an additives the Chinese manufacturer used does an exceptional job of holding odors.  I will return this thing once I find my receipt.

Silicone Vegetable Steamer March 6, 2012

I purchased your silicone vegetable steamer. It works very well when steaming veggies in a stovetop pot. I am wondering if it is ok to use your silicone steamer in a pressure cooker?

I use an Elite brand electric 12psi pressure cooker that has a 10" non-stick inner cooking pot. In order to protect its non-stick pot, I would like to use silicone steaming baskets in the bottom instead of a metal steaming basket.

transferred odor to food February 7, 2012

I was soooooo excited about this.  It's flexible enough into fit into my smallest pan.  But.....the vegetables tasted like the steamer.  A fragrant, almost soap smell.

I read that silicone items that turn white at the crease when you bend them contain filler (meaning not 100% silicone) and that the odor of the filler can transfer to the food.  Well, I bent it and it turned white.  Wasted organic veggies.  Bummer.  I will return the item tomorrow.

Shoptrudeau.com notes:  we are sorry to hear that you experienced problems with our Silicone Steamer.  We addressed your concerns with one of the product developers for this category.  Here are his comments:

Silicone turning white when bending or stretching, it is a normal stress reaction more apparent on "rigid" versions of silicone and other common food safe plastics. Silicone is made up of a combination of additives.  The version we use passes FDA regulations.

Based on the consumer's description of a "fragrant, almost soap smell", it is possible that this was a result of a bad rinsing cycle from her dishwasher. Given that the item has many small holes, it is a possibility that soap residue was locked up in some of the fine holes and dried/crystallized in place during the drying cycle. This would have been released in boiling water and steam.

This product has a 5-year warranty, we'd be happy to send you a new one.  Please contact our customer service department.
